Channing, Audre and I
‘Another important way in which the erotic connection functions is the open and fearless underlining of my capacity for joy. In the way my body stretches to music and opens into response, hearkening to its deepest rhythms, so every level upon which I sense also opens to the erotically satisfying experience, whether it is dancing, building a bookcase, writing a poem, examining an idea.’

Audre Lorde – Uses of the Erotic

A largely biographical solo performance / dance piece inspired by my love to dance on nights out and how clothes and dancing (particular in a night club venue) have been instrumental for me becoming comfortable with my own identity as a queer woman and as a sexual being in my own right. For me, dancing in a club simulates erotically charged good feelings, without sex. The loud music and smells , the movement of the body, getting dressed up or down into an outfit that makes you feel good, being surrounded by friends and strangers - for me, is incredibly empowering and freeing. It is important to stress that I am talking of queer spaces when I talk of such nights/clubs. Spaces that are at least theoretically safe for people of all identities to be themselves and have fun. This piece also explores my ‘contradictions’ of personality - for my love of punk to my love of Beyoncé, my gay sexuality to my love of male strippers in Magic Mike XXL.
